Schools' public speaking competition 2014

Speaking Competition

Thu 12 Jun 2014

We're holding Derby's second schools' and colleges' Public Speaking Competition between Mon 30 Jun and Fri 4 Jul, with a public final taking place on Fri 4 Jul.

Schools across Derby will compete for the Chris Williamson Trophy and students aged 14 - 18 will participate in professionally-led workshops on public speaking. Workshops will be held in the Guildhall Theatre Clubrooms during the week of Mon 30 Jun - Fri 4 Jul. Each school can submit up to 8 students.

Workshops will take place between 12 noon - 1pm, Mon - Thu and will be hosted by local Theatre Company - Lost Boys - who will give each student professional training in order to develop their public speaking skills.

After the workshops, all students will be given the opportunity to put their new skills into practice by delivering their own speech. A winning student will be selected from each school and will go through to the public final.

The public final will take place at Derby's Speakers' Corner, on the Market Place, on Fri 4 Jul from 12 noon. Each finalist will deliver their speech and will be judged by a panel - including Chris Williamson MP himself - before an overall winner is chosen. Members of the public are encouraged to come down and support local pupils as they compete in the final.

The winner, and their respective school, will retain the Chris Williamson Trophy for one year.
