It's Disabled Access Day!

Person doing sign language alongside a show

Fri 10 Mar 2017

Disabled Access Day begins today, and this year the day has been extended across the weekend from

10 – 12 March as a way to create opportunities for people to try something new and celebrate good access.

This day is about highlighting the fantastic access that already exists in places, such as touch tours, relaxed performances, level access and of course a warm welcome!

At Derby LIVE we strive to make our venues, events and services as accessible as possible. We believe that theatre-going should be accessible to all, and have a strong commitment to making this happen.

Look out for these icons and information on our event pages:

British Sign Language (BSL) Interpreted Performances

BSL-icon.png

British sign language (BSL) interpreted performances feature a signer at the side of the stage (usually on the right) who signs the dialogue from the performance.

Audio Described Performances

Free touch tours take place 75 mins before audio described performances, with the chance to familiarise yourself with the set and costumes.

Relaxed Performances

Designed and adapted for customers with a wide range of disabilities and those on the autistic spectrum. They have a less formal, more supportive atmosphere in order to reduce anxiety levels.

Captioned Performances

Words appear on screens either side of the stage right as they are spoken, ideal for those who are deaf, hard of hearing or just like to read along.

Infra-red Hearing System

An infra-red sound system is available in all of our venues, headsets and hearing aid attachments are available for your free use.

Accessible Venues

Most public areas of the Guildhall Theatre and Derby Arena are wheelchair accessible and have accessible toilets. Wheelchair spaces are also available in both venues.

Assistance Dogs

We welcome assistance dogs at all venues.

Essential Companion Scheme

We offer a free ticket to customers who need someone with them to assist with mobility or guidance. You need to apply to join the scheme (as an individual or as an organisation). Application forms are downloadable from our website or you can request one from the Sales and Information Centre, Assembly Rooms, Market Place, Derby, DE1 3AH

Coming up so far this year we have a number of exciting shows offering a range of access performances across our venues.

Coming up in the next few months, we also offer a  BSL performance of Bess, a one-woman drama mixing theatre with film portraying Bess of Hardwick and outdoor musical fun at Markeaton Park with Romeo and Juliet and a relaxed performance of family show with CBeebies favourites in Bad Guys.
