About the event

First performed in 1882, Gilbert & Sullivan’s fairy-tale comic opera, Iolanthe, is based on a confrontation between the Queen of the Fairies and the Lord Chancellor.

The show combines political satire and fantasy in the story of Iolanthe, a fairy who has been banished for marrying a mortal. Iolanthe’s son, Strephon, loves Phyllis, who is a ward of court, but the Lord Chancellor refuses permission for them to marry. When the Fairy Queen speaks up for Strephon the Lord Chancellor rebuffs her, and she retaliates by installing Strephon into Parliament, as a Liberal-Conservative with the power to carry out every bill he chooses.
The members of the House of Lords, who “did nothing in particular, and did it very well”, are dismayed at the chaos caused by Strephon’s proposal to throw the peerage open to competitive examination, but a happy ending is assured by a typical Gilbertian plot twist.
