About the event

What happens when the monarch starts to lose his mind? Who stands to gain and who falls with him?

Acclaimed British playwright Alan Bennett explores the darkness of mental illness with dialogue and characters that make you laugh and cry. Based on real events that shook the foundations of Britain’s Court and Parliament, Derby Shakespeare Theatre Company takes a traditional, early 19th century Royal family and drops them into a seething 21st century hotbed of political spin and posturing.

Bennett’s nod to the Bard, invoking Shakespeare’s own exploration of madness in King Lear, runs throughout this play thus making it an obvious choice for Derby Shakespeare Theatre Company’s next production.
