A fantastic set from one of the original "Pitmen Poets" and also an outstanding artist on the national acoustic music scene.
He's been with us quite a numbers of times, and never fails to impress, and entertain whether on stage, or off! Bob is so well known, and so well loved, that he probably needs very little introduction. His career has spanned over forty years, and all began in 1975... After spending 5 years as a floor singer around the many folk clubs in the North East of England as well as being a resident singer at the famous Davy lamp Folk Club in Washington, Bob Fox met fellow North Easterner Tom McConville and his career as a professional folk singer/musician began.
There followed 35 years of fabulous music, and wonderful performances, both solo, and in fine collaborations... Bob was enjoying great popularity as a solo artist and having much fun touring as a duo with Billy. The new "Pitmen Poets" were all set to take the scene by storm when a meeting with John Tams changed his life completely! Bob was doing a solo gig at The Spanker Inn, Nether Heage (Tam's home village) 1st July 2011 and John arrived at the gig late and they chatted on long after the gig was over during which time John suggested that Bob would be an ideal "Songman" in the National Theatre's production of War Horse in the West End. 3 months later Bob was rehearsing in London with the new cast and travelling up and down to the North to fulfill Pitmen Poets gigs. He opened in the New London Theatre as "Songman" in October 2011!!
He's been busy in that amazing role for a number of years, and it's great to find time for him to come back to see us in Derby.
Drawing on influences such as John Martyn, Roy Harper and Laura Marling, Katie Spencer creates modern progressive folk music which owes as much the songwriters of the 60’s acoustic music heyday as it does the East Riding landscape where she has always felt a strong spiritual connection. Her striking vocals and deft songwriting are backed by an evocative and complex guitar style that takes her music to places that are both esoteric and beautiful. At just 22 years old, Katie has already built up an extremely respected profile within the national acoustic music scene, receiving praise from the likes of Ralph McTell & Michael Chapman. She has shared the stage with world-class musicians such as Ted McKenna & Foss Paterson, and was part of this year’s Celtic Connections celebrations alongside Paul Weller & Eddi Reader playing at Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall.
With various releases already under her belt, Katie was awarded with the Yorkshire Gig Guide Outstanding Emerging Artist in 2018 and continues to receive glowing reviews of both her live performances and recorded works. Ralph McTell said “Katie’s guitar playing has echoes of my dear friend the late great Bert Jansch. Like a musical weaver she threads her poetic lyrics through the guitar’s strings and produces little tapestries of song.”
This year sees Katie embarking on a UK tour in celebration of her brand-new album. ‘Weather Beaten’ is a flawless and flowing ten track journey that encapsulates her mesmerising live performance style, subtly embellished by the world-renowned instrumental dexterity of Tom Mason, Miles Bould and Martin Winning on double bass, percussion and woodwind. Produced by Spencer Cozens, long-time collaborator of John Martyn and Joan Armatrading, the sound of the album is clear and bright, bringing a precision and boldness reminiscent of the best ‘ECM’ modern jazz albums, which naturally pairs with the warm and hazy folk sound that envelops Katie’s style.Her debut studio release ‘Good Morning Sky’ (May 2017) received praise from the likes of Iain Anderson and RnR Magazine as they went on to say “her dense, brooding and heartfelt songs have an attractive dreamlike quality that suggest a bright future.” Recorded in Glasgow, the atmosphere of the mini-album “recalls some of the essence of [John] Martyn's best music. The songs are treated to a delicate and mature guitar style to go with her distinctively graceful voice” - Northern Sky Magazine.
