About the event

A celebration of the National Youth Folk Ensemble’s first year together, showcasing 17 talented young musicians performing new folk arrangements.

The National Youth Folk Ensemble launched in October 2016, bringing together 17 of the most talented young folk musicians from across England. During the year, the 14-18 year old musicians participate in four intensive weeks of music-making in different parts of England, working with folk luminaries such as Sam Sweeney (Artistic Director 2016-17), Rob Harbron, Jenn Butterworth, Sarah Hayes and Saul Rose.

The Ensemble celebrates its first year together with a performance in Derby, before setting off on tour! Expect modern arrangements of folk tunes from England and beyond, alongside new compositions drawing on traditional music, all created and performed by these rising stars.

The Barber sisters will be providing a support act for this performance from 7.30pm. Lydia, Isobel and Ellie are three sisters from the village of Thorpe in Derbyshire. Inspired by fiddle workshops at Folkworks summer schools, they discovered their love for Scottish folk music and have since been one of the 10 acts shortlisted for the BBC Young Folk Award nomination 2015.
