Celebrating another Successful Hannells Darley Park Concert

Thu 5 Sep 2019

This year’s Hannells Darley Park Concert, which took place on Sunday 1 September, was a resounding success.

The event, which is supported by Hannells, Derby Telegraph, Flint Bishop Solicitors, Homes 2 Opportunities, HUUB, Mobile Solutions, Mortgage Advice Bureau, Stratstone BMW Derby and WDS Limited, was enjoyed by residents of Derby and beyond.

With over 11,000 tickets purchased, groups of families and friends flocked to the natural amphitheatre that is Darley Park to secure the best spot for the concert. Crowds were wowed with the spectacular sound of Grammy-nominated orchestra, Sinfonia Viva who treated audiences to music which celebrated 1969 and golden anniversaries. As is tradition, the concert’s grand finale was of course the stunning firework display which filled the summer night’s sky.

This year’s programme included an eclectic mix of music selected to commemorate the iconic moments of 50 years previous. To celebrate 50 years since the first moon landing, the concert opened with the instantly recognisable Also Sprach which was used in 2001’s film Space Odyssey. The crowd were treated to Here Comes the Sun (George Harrison), Come Fly with Me (Jimmy Van Heusen) and the Dr Who theme (Ron Grainer).  Bryan Adam’s hit Summer of ’69 was accompanied by the incredible vocals of Grant Doyle, prompting many of the audience to get on their feet and dance in front of the stage. Fans of Derby County, and the club’s mascot, Rammie, enjoyed Steve Bloomer’s Watchin’ sound out through the park.

The fireworks danced in the sky along to the Light Calvary Overture (Franz von Suppé) which concluded 2019’s Hannells Darley Park Concert.

Just like last year, the stage itself was flanked by two big screens giving everyone a greater view of the orchestra and the chance to appear on them by sharing their photos on social media by using the hastag #darley19.

Councillor Robin Wood, cabinet member for Culture, Leisure and Tourism who was present at the concert, explained

“I’ve been coming to this since 1990, they get better every year, I’ve been asking for big screens so everyone can see the orchestra, it’s thanks to Hannells and our sponsors that we have them and they make a huge improvement.

“The concert is definitely going to happen next year and we look forward to working with our great sponsors so we can continue to deliver this event for the people of Derby.”
