Guildhall Theatre update

Mon 30 Dec 2019

The Guildhall Theatre has been closed since the beginning of the year after the auditorium ceiling became unsafe.

As repair works progressed over the summer, it was discovered that the condition of the fabric of the building was much worse than previously thought.

In September, the Council started a wider review of the Guildhall Theatre and the interconnected buildings. This has revealed that other aspects of the buildings and the associated infrastructure require further detailed investigation, which is expected to take several months to complete. This in turn will enable the Council to draw up a detailed programme of works, along with the estimated costs and timescales.

Councillor Robin Wood, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism, said: “In September, we made the difficult but sensible decision to undertake a detailed assessment of the work needed to bring the Guildhall Theatre back into use, as a key cultural venue for the City Centre. It is vitally important we have a complete understanding of all the issues that need to be resolved, so that we maximise the opportunity to address them together, rather than taking a piecemeal approach, which could potentially cause further unwelcome delay. As an historic building, there are additional complexities that we need to manage carefully, but the council is doing all it can to ensure this landmark facility is re-opened as soon as practically possible.”

Updates on the project will continue to be provided when available.
