Derby City Council has announced it is exploring options for a city centre 300-400 seat semi-permanent performance venue.

It is thought that a semi permanent venue would quickly bring added vibrancy and activity to the centre of Derby. The extra numbers of people visiting would also benefit the surrounding businesses enhancing the day and night time economies.

A semi-permanent venue could rapidly provide more cultural activity while plans for a new large scale venue and the Guildhall Theatre continue to progress.

Cllr Robin Wood, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture, said: “At the moment the options are being explored to see what can be done and what is practical. There is strong desire to generate cultural activity in the centre of Derby and this option might help deliver that quickly.”

If the semi-permanent venue proves feasible to deliver then the Council will look to make a decision to go ahead with the project in the coming weeks.
