About the event

Gary says it’s not about glamour no more. Men want girls they could have in real life. Amateur girls. A hard-hitting, poignant yet wryly amusing play about the reality behind the fantasy business, based on real-life stories.

Julie is working long hours for a low wage in a Nottingham hospital and longs for some real excitement and a bit of spare cash. When her new boyfriend buys a camcorder, Julie is drawn into the world of DIY porn. She’s calling the shots, she’s making the decisions… or is she? Julie’s new life can’t stay secret for long, what starts as a bit of fun becomes anything but.

Amateur Girl is a hard-hitting, poignant yet wryly amusing play about the reality behind the fantasy business.
Based on real-life stories, Amateur Girl is a one-woman drama starring Lucy Speed (Eastenders, The Bill) and directed by Kate Chapman.

Amanda Whittington has been described as Britain's 'most consistently popular female dramatist' (The Guardian'). Her plays include Be My Baby (1998) which was originally produced by Soho Theatre and was subsequently staged throughout the UK, including at our Derby Theatre in May 2011. Be My Baby currently features on some GCSE syllabuses. Ladies Day (2005) and its sequel Ladies Down Under (2007) (Hull Truck/UK Tours) are also widely performed.

Age recommendation: 16+ (Sexual references, some swearing, some violent references. No nudity.)

Reviews

“An admirably non-judgmental account of the realities of subsisting on a minimum wage … Whittington has crafted a perceptive and compassionate account of a vivacious but vulnerable character.” The Guardian
