Joy Carter was born in Nigeria. She was adopted by a white couple and grew up as the only black person in Scunthorpe, which was not relaxing. After a spell as a showgirl, which sat easily with her Christian beliefs, she turned to comedy. She tells her story through stand up, dance, 1980’s power ballads and her alter-ego Delphine, who is the only person on the stand-up circuit who plays the flute angrily.
Even so, her underlying theme is hope – and joy.
