Back to present

Derby LIVE is delighted to announce that Classic FM, the UK’s most popular classical music radio station, is once again the media partner for the event. Classic FM’s Saturday lunchtime presenter Nicholas Owen will be introducing an audience of more than 30,000 people to the concert which features the world’s greatest classical music from concert hall, stage and screen.

This year's theme

Couples come in all varieties: from wildly romantic to completely platonic; from magical and mysterious to business-like, matter-of-fact, working partnerships; from the caring-and-sharing to the out-and-out warring…

Whatever the nature, the theme of ‘couples’ has remained a dominant one in musical history right up to the present day – be it famous collaborating composer-and-lyricist teams, sensational performing duos, or the many thousands of songs and melodies which explore the highs and lows of relationships between two people in (or out) of love.

This year’s Darley Park Concert explores the full breadth of the theme through a sparkling selection of tunes, with connections explained and pieces introduced by returning conductor James Holmes, joined for vocal selections by soloists Oliver Johnston (tenor), Rosalind Coad (soprano) and members of the Big Adventures Youth Theatre Company.

Karl and the Marx Brothers will be performing passionate songs about this crazy mixed up and beautiful place we call the present, as part of the pre-show entertainment. Karl and the Marx Brothers are five 30/40 somethings juggling parent hood, careers and aching bones all whilst reaching for a tune.

Beautifully peculiar in their marriage of heartfelt anger and pleasantly insidious tunes Boff Whalley (Chumbawamba/R2 magazine.)
