Less than a week to go until Derby Parks’ SUPER event at home

Fri 24 Jul 2020

Our virtual event, Superhero Picnic at Home, is now less than a week away! We were sad to cancel our annual Superhero Picnic in the Park due to Covid-19 restrictions, but to take its place, we launched this brand new online event, and it promises to be a super day!

Join us on Tuesday 28 July from 11am to 3pm for a day filled with FREE superhero fun as we release lots of videos and other activities throughout the day. Don’t forget to put on your best Superhero outfit and prepare your tastiest sandwiches to celebrate in true superhero style!

Our partners for the event have been busy preparing lots of great things for you to get stuck into on the day. Whether you want to get active or crafty, or just have a little bit of fun, we have something for everyone! Join in with Derby Active or Sporting Body Ltd for a variety of different workout videos from Gymnastics, to PE classes, to Learn to Swim activities; grab some pots and pans, or get your hands ready to make lots of noise with Rockin’ Robins’ superhero drumming workshop; or tune into Jumping Clay’s storytelling workshop for a super story and some model making. Our very own Mr Parkie will also be hosting a game of Superhero bingo during the day, so make sure you download and create your bingo cards before Tuesday! The bingo cards, as well as a range of other activity sheets are already available for you on our website at inderby.org.uk/about/news/derby-parks-superhero-picnic-is-going-virtual/  .

We also have a range of activity sheets from our partners available for you to download. Rockin’ Robins have a print-out drumming workshop based on some well-known Superheroes for you to try, and Move More Derby are encouraging you to strike your best Superhero pose with some super workouts. Write Print Create have some great tips on how to draw your own Superhero and Supervillain, which you can then use to create your own Superhero stories! And if you want to accessorise your Superhero costume even more, Derby Recycles will tell you how to make a Superhero rocket-pack, and Derby Homes will show you how to make your own Superhero cuff.

Councillor Robin Wood, Derby City Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism, said: “It is great that we have been able to go ahead with this much loved annual event, albeit in a different way from usual. The Superhero Picnic is always a highlight in the year, and I’m delighted that, as the time isn’t right to encourage a big event in our parks just yet, Derby LIVE and Derby Parks have worked hard, along with event partners, to create lots of activities for children to engage with at home.”

It’s not too late to print out and colour in your own superhero mask or some of our Superhero bunting to decorate your garden or living room, ready to enjoy the picnic lunch at 12 noon. And to finish the day, we are making our special Superhero certificates available to download so you can print yours out and have your own little awards ceremony to finish a superhero filled day.

All of the day’s activities will be posted on the Facebook event, as well as being available on our webpage inderby.org.uk/about/news/derby-parks-superhero-picnic-is-going-virtual/  throughout the day and in the weeks afterwards, just in case you missed the event, or would like to revisit any of the activities.
