On 12th May 2020, the world will celebrate Florence Nightingale's 200th birthday. You can join the celebrations just yards from Florence's Derbyshire home with the one women show Kissing Miss Nightingale’s Shadow.
After her return from the Crimean war, Florence came home to the family home in Holloway, Derbyshire. It is arguable that, at the time, she was the most famous woman in the world, a legend in her own lifetime.
There was so much more to Florence than the Lady With The Lamp. When you consider Victorian society and the restraints on women, her achievements are all the more remarkable. She can be described as a social reformer, mathematician, theologist, writer and a feminist who despised the role of women in Victorian society. Florence was nothing short of remarkable.
The title, Kissing Miss Nightingale's Shadow, comes from a letter, sent by a soldier, to the poet Henry Longfellow. “We lay there by hundreds but we could kiss her shadow as it fell, and lay our heads on the pillow again, content.” Inspired, Longfellow wrote 'Santa Filomena'.
Written by Derbyshire playwright George Gunby, it features Ellie Ward as Florence Nightingale. This one women show will be premiered here before embarking on a yearlong UK tour.
Tickets are also on sale for other dates of the tour in Alstonefield, Derby, Heanor, Chesterfield and Buxton.
